Thangka Painting Demonstration

Rinzing Gyaltsen Yongewa

November 4, 2007; 64 Minutes; Video

Tibetan Buddhist and ritual arts form a key section of  Parting the Curtain, and this demonstration by artist Rinzing Gyaltsen Yongewa illuminates the tangible spirituality of painting thangkas (“rolled paintings” of religious subjects) like the ones seen in the exhibit. Trained at a young age by his artist uncle and fortified by the encouragement of the Dalai Lama, Rinzing has spent twenty years mastering this complex art. He lives and works in Rohnert Park, California.

The golden form of the historical Buddha Sakyamuni was the subject of this demonstration. Rinzing Gyaltsen applied some of the 250-plus colors that can make up such images as he answered questions from BAM/PFA visitors.
