Kurt Schwitters: Color and Collage
Reconstruction of the Merzbau at BAM/PFA

August 3, 2011; 5 Minutes; Video

MERZbau reconstruction at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, July 2011.

Dada/Constructivist artist Kurt Schwitters's legendary Hanover Merzbau, which was built over time in the artist's apartment in Hanover, was destroyed in 1943 during an Allied air raid.

The reconstruction was created from 1981 to 1983 by my father, Peter Bissegger, through extensive calculations and research and, importantly, Kurt Schwitters's son Ernst's keen memory of the structure details.

Information about the long adventure of reconstructing this lost classic of modern art can be found at merzbaureconstruction.com
