La Victoria
Peter Lilienthal (West Germany,1973)

Peter Lilienthal in Person!

Peter Lilienthal shot La Victoria in Chile in Spring 1973, a few months before the military coup that ended the Chilean socialist experiment so vividly depicted in the documentary background scenes for La Victoria.
According to Lilienthal: “We filmed La Victoria in Chile. The film is about a girl from the middle class who hasn’t any political understanding. She is receptive to imitating the upper class as well as working with the people. In this historical situation, as it was during the time of Allende, her ideal was socialism and she turned to it, not out of convictions, but out of a subjective feeling arising from her experience and ideals. La Victoria and my films Headmaster Hofer and Calm Prevails Over the Country constitute a sort of trilogy dealing with certain specific historical situations.”

• Directed by Peter Lilienthal. Screenplay by Lilienthal and Antonio Skarmeta. Photographed by Silvio Caiozzi. With Paula Moya, Vicente Santa Maria, Carmen Lazo. (1973, 84 mins, 35mm, color, In Spanish with English synopsis provided, Print Courtesy of The Goethe Institute)
