2:00 p.m. Artists’ Films from Beirut to Tehran
Lida Abdul, Mireille Astore, Fabian Astore, Yto Barrada, Mona Hatoum, Lamia Joreige, Rosalind Nashashibi, Shirin Neshat, Zineb Sedira (1988–2006)

A selection of striking films by artists, most of whom have moved between East and West. In Mona Hatoum’s Measures of Distance, conversations and letters between the artist in Britain and her mother in Beirut speak of exile and displacement. Lamia Joreige’s Replay reflects on the process of reminiscence and attempts to reconstruct a narrative. 3494 Houses and 1 Fence, by Mireille and Fabian Astore, is an assault on the senses using rapid montage in which an outback town in Australia is juxtaposed with Ain-Haj-Elias, Lebanon. Rosalind Nashashibi’s Dahiet al bareed depicts one slow, hot afternoon in a neighborhood built as a utopian suburb for employees of the Palestinian post office. In Don’t do to her what you did to me, Zineb Sedira invokes a ritual performed on her in her teens. Shirin Neshat’s two-screen video Fervor depicts a subtle narrative of glances across a scrim separating the women and men at a mosque. Young boys sell bricks in the middle of a desert in Lida Abdul’s Brick Sellers of Kabul. Yto Barrada’s The Magician, featuring the magic tricks of an elderly man who calls himself Sinbad of the Straits, will be presented in the theater preceding the screening; doors open at 1:40 p.m.
