Kim Longinotto U.K., 2002
In the Somali community of Nairobi, Kenya, female genital mutilation is still a common practice. A new husband puts his fear of being shamed by his friends before his wife's well-being. Middle-class mothers rationalize their own suffering, which they have passed on to their daughters. Kim Longinotto (Divorce Iranian Style, Gaea Girls) takes a many-faceted look at the complex social and cultural forces that continue to thwart effective reform. Ultimately, hope is found in a group of young girls who successfully petition the court for a restraining order against their parents.
