Bringing up Baby
Howard Hawks (USA,1938)

The orderly life of a staid paleontologist (Cary Grant) is upset by a very wealthy, very confusing and confused young lady (Katherine Hepburn). Rapid-fire dialogue, zany story, wacky characterizations plus the Hawks fun kind of direction make this one of the most convulsively funny screwball comedies of the thirties. Features the song, “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, Baby.”

“The American movies’ closest equivalent to Restoration Comedy. This is Hepburn’s best comedy.”

—Pauline Kael, “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”

• Directed by Howard Hawks. Based on a story by Hagar Wilde. With Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Charlie Ruggles, May Robson. (1938, 100 mins, Print from Films Inc.)
