Skank Bloc Bologna Number Four: Publication Launch; Wrap-Up Party With Oxbow
June 18, 2010; 7:30 p.m.; Gallery BRSVP on Facebook
Programmed by Anne Colvin
The final night of Anne Colvin's Skank Bloc Bologna Number Four series for L@TE features Oxbow. The band, for the better part of the last bit of forever, have brought their persistent and peculiar brand of music, mixing equal parts American blues, musique concrète, and classical formalism with coruscating effect from Tokyo to Athens, London to Rome, and now SBB4. Having shared stages/spaces with the likes of The Melvins, Isis, Neurosis, Harvey Milk, The Boredoms, Shellac, and countless others, Oxbow was recently blessed by Vice Magazine as “the best art rock band in the world.” Appearing in spare and stripped-down form, Oxbow will be performing selections from their six-album songbook, all acoustically. With special guest artists.
This closing evening of the Skank Bloc Bologna Number Four L@TE series also sees the launch of the ephemeral paper publication of the same name. Unique to BAM/PFA patrons, in an edition of fifty, the print version of SBB4 will include remnants from the hybrid performance, sound, spoken word, and film experiences. Contributors include Tosh Berman, members of the Cal Fencing Club, Fools in Print, Greens, Tania Ketenjian, Jennifer Locke, Eugene Robinson, Allan deSouza, Michael Hannon, William Wiley, and more. Several of the participating artists will be on hand to sign their works.
Finally, a juxtaposition of previously screened SBB4 L@TE film and video sources, including The Harder They Come, The Beast in Space, and Tommy, will play silently while curator Chuck Mobley, a.k.a. DJ Skank, responds to the Italian influence in Skank Bloc Bologna. Performance highlights from SBB4 L@TE events screen throughout the evening.
At 6 p.m., Citizen Zain will re-play some of the SBB4 favorites. Wine and beer will be available for purchase.
