Lou Harrison’s La Koro Sutro

May 25, 2012; 7:30 p.m.; Gallery B

RSVP on Facebook

Programmed by Sarah Cahill
Doors 5:00

Join us in celebrating what would have been the ninety-fifth birthday of the brilliant and innovative California composer Lou Harrison. Our galleries will reverberate, shimmer, and shake with no fewer than three choruses (the UC Berkeley Chamber Chorus, Sacred and Profane, and the USF Classical Choral Ensemble) and a large battery of handcrafted percussion instruments known as the American gamelan. The evening features a performance of Harrison’s powerful La Koro Sutro, conducted by Marika Kuzma, as well as a handful of chamber works, including one performed by the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio. Sarah Cahill will perform the solo piano piece "Dance for Lisa Karon," a newly-discovered manuscript which has not been performed since 1939. Please come early for best seating. A limited number of chairs will be available; please bring a pillow and make yourself comfortable on the gallery floor.

Between May 23 and May 25, Harrison's original gamelan instruments, built by the composer and William Colvig, will be displayed in Gallery B. Eric Marin's insightful documentary, Lou Harrison: Cherish, Conserve, Consider, Create, about the construction of these handmade instruments, will also be on view.

L@TE is made possible in part by the continued support of the BAM/PFA Trustees. Special thanks to our media sponsors, East Bay Express and San Francisco Bay Guardian. Lou Harrison’s La Koro Sutro is sponsored by New Albion Records.
