Brooklyn Is Burning co-founder Sarvia Jasso presents Kalup Linzy, Videos, and DJ Bus Station John

April 9, 2010; 7:30 p.m.; Gallery B

RSVP on Facebook

Brooklyn Is Burning co-founder Sarvia Jasso curates a special one-night event of uncontrollable flesh featuring a live performance by Kalup Linzy, an exciting new video program, and DJ sets by Bus Station John. The provocative multimedia presentation explores questions of identity, sexuality, and transgression, activating a creative community of international artists, both emerging and established.

Currently in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts, Kalup Linzy is a performance artist best known for his soap-opera parodies such as All My Churen (2003) and Da Young and Da Mess (2005). These clever satires of Hollywood and television melodramas examine charged questions of race, gender, class, and sexuality. Linzy’s work is included in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Studio Museum in Harlem, and Whitney Museum of American Art. This will be his first West Coast museum performance.

The video program includes works by assume vivid astro focus, Theo Adams, Cara Benedetto, Catherine Czacki, Coco Dolle, Zackary Drucker, Maggie Foster, Kathryn Garcia, Kate Gilmore, Matt Greene, Desiree Holman, Leigh Ledare, Marie Losier featuring Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Orlan, Lovett/Codagnone, Nadja Verena Marcin, Claudia Mendoza, Kori Newkirk, Dean Sameshima, Samuel Vasquez and Marnie Weber, and Dena Yago.

DJ Bus Station John is San Francisco’s premier rare-disco revivalist. He currently helms the decks at his popular Tenderloin alterna-queer institution The Tubesteak Connection (Thursdays @ Aunt Charlie’s Lounge, now in its sixth year), and numerous other parties, including Le Perle Degli Squallor.

Preceded at 6 p.m. by DJ Bus Station John spinning in Gallery B. Wine and beer will be available for purchase.

Please note: This program contains adult themes and is not recommended for children.
