In his most recent photographs, Luis Gispert, the 2003 recipient of The Baum Award, turns ordinary people into dramatic, costumed figures, and domestic settings into elaborately staged tableaux. Conveying a sensibility both baroque and surreal, the large-scale Cibachrome photograph Untitled (Bedroom) (2003) depicts an elaborately attired woman adorned in jewels sitting at the edge of a bed in a dimly lit room, her hands pressed together in prayer, eyes turned apprehensively towards the heavens. The potentially reverent atmosphere is undercut by a large boom box that dominates the foreground, suggesting that volume and theatricality replace piousness in ensuring the woman’s prayers are heard. Gispert has donated Untitled (Bedroom) to the museum’s collection as a provision of the Baum Award. The work is on view along with two other new photographs by the artist in the museum’s Theater Gallery.
